I assumed, when he said he wanted to black out the windows, he meant because some creepy lurker might be peeping on his fake gooses and ducks. Naw. That wasn't why. He just wanted to keep the garage all cool in the summertime.
I went to Home Depot and looked at some stuff.
I am familiar with this stuff, a friend of mine used it to add some privacy to her front door window.
This stuff is what I used on J's garage windows. It is seriously easy to use at least for the small surfaces I was covering. One thing to keep in mind is don't use ammonia based window sprays, just get either the Armour All for car windows, which is ok for window tint, or I suppose you could use mild soapy water. The Home Depot display also had a bottle of something supposedly for that very purpose, but I generally don't get very excited about being asked to spend even more money to do something like spray watery stuff on a window.
I used the technique of cutting out my sized based on my clumsy measurements of the spaces having forgotten where I left my glasses. There are tiny clear spaces around the edges of the tint, which in reality is not so bad, considering there is also paint spray and other yucky stuff on the other side of the window. If you look from the outside it looks pretty perfect. If you're inside the garage, you can see the error. Therefore I would recommend cutting each about 1/2 inch to one inch bigger than the pane of glass you intend to tint, place your tint, then use an Exacto knife to slice around the edges, using the window glazing or wood frame as a guide, producing a perfectly sized panel of tint per pane.
Also use a ton of spray. If you use enough spray on the window the tint just floats on. Place the tint in the space available, and ever so slowly lift your edges and allow the tint to lay down again, it practically puts itself on.

my swagger wagon is gangsta tinted on the back windows. who puts aftermarket tint on a minivan? on a car-rental-used-minivan at that...you can't see in that thing for anything. unless it is super dark outside and the light is on inside. then you can press your head to the glass and see in.
Thanks for the idea.
mine has really dark tint on the back ones too but I'm sure it came that way.
